PoE switch running hot to the touch or cameras dropping offline intermittently are two of the more common frustrations in a PoE CCTV system, and they're often connected problems rather than separate issues. Working through the likely causes systematically, rather than guessing at aA single fix, tends to get to the actual root of the problem faster.
Start by Checking the Switch's Total Power Load
The single most common cause of both overheating and intermittent camera power loss is a switch running close to or beyond its total power budget. Every PoE switch has a maximum total power capacity it can supply across all connected ports simultaneously, and pushing a switch consistently near that limit generates more heat during operation while also increasing the risk of certain ports losing adequate power, particularly if you're running several higher-draw devices like PTZ cameras on the same switch.
Adding up the actual power draw of every currently connected device and comparing that total against your switch's rated power budget is the first diagnostic step worth taking, since this single check often reveals the underlying cause behind both symptoms simultaneously rather than needing to investigate them as unrelated problems.
Check Physical Ventilation and Installation Location
PoE switches generate heat as a normal part of operation, and inadequate ventilation around the unit significantly worsens this, sometimes to the point of triggering thermal protection features that reduce power output to connected ports as a safety measure. A switch installed inside a sealed cabinet without adequate airflow, positioned in direct sunlight, or stacked tightly against other heat-generating equipment will run considerably hotter than the same switch in a well-ventilated location.
Checking that your switch has adequate clearance around its ventilation openings, isn't installed in a position receiving direct heat from sunlight or nearby equipment, and is mounted in a location with reasonable airflow rather than a sealed, enclosed space often resolves overheating issues that have nothing to do with the switch actually being overloaded in terms of power budget.
